Farewell Tribute to Oliver Fernandes
Some say that the gods take those who are young, early. Oliver Fernandes was one of those young at heart, a gentle soul, and a good friend. We miss him already. Zanzibar was, and is the paradise on earth that gave the world gentle souls like Oliver, without a doubt. Each of us, former Zanzibaris remember the Fernandes family who were the nicest people in Zanzibar. Oliver, Clara, Celina and Accu. We all loved this wonderful family.
Now, it seems that Oliver has joined his wonderful family in heaven much to our sadness. May they all rest in peace.
We all remember Oliver and his family in a myriad of ways. My sister Yvette remembers Oliver and many times she spent at the Fernandes family home where the girls permed her hair par excellence. Yvette and Mike met Oliver in Goa in 2008 at the SJCS reunion and recall what a gentle soul Oliver was. She sends much love and condolences to Oliver’s family. She understands their pain because Mike is in heaven too as of 2020, and she urges them to hang in there. God bless.
Betty and I remember Oliver’s generous welcomes in Goa during the Reunion. Oliver assisted us with our planning of various venues and often entertained us at his home.

Sorry to learn of the demise of Oliver , a wonderful person. Had the pleasure of meeting him at his home in Goa and was present at the mini reunion in Goa 5 years ago.
My deepest sympathies to his wife, Clara and the family, in Goa and England.

Deeply saddened to hear of the loss of dear Oliver
I did not have the privilege of getting to know him well, as I left Zanzibar just a few years after he arrived from India
I met him and his family in Goa on one occasion and got to know him better
Of course I knew about him through his sister Clara, my sister-in-law

Oliver has been a very good friend of mine for many years. Our friendship blossomed the time he arrived in Zanzibar from boarding school. Since than our friendship went in all directions with his loving family, his siblings and the rest.
Our house was open to him as much as his house was open to me. Every Sunday after mass instead of going to communion, we had a toddy session. The culprits, Tony Nick, Ammiot, Abel, Accu, Oliver and Joe De Mello. For transport we had Oliver's car and Joe's VW.
Oliver thank you for all the good times you've given me when I visited you in Goa. The best holiday I had one Christmas when I made you laugh with my jokes.
Oliver I love you, Clara, Sharmain, Savio and Nelson. May Oliver rest in peace.

Thank you Benny for your tributes to Oliver.I met him at the SJCSZ Re Union in Goa ,2008.
We spent a lot of time together talking about his job as Superident of Zanzibar Prisions after the Revolution in Zanzibar. He said he applied for a short holiday and left his Uniform intact at the office and he never returned back to Zanzibar, although the Zanzibar Revolution send him a request letter to return. He never went back.
It was a pleasure to have met him. A gentlemen and honest man .May he rest st in peace .
